MOSCOW, December 11. /TASS/. The Ukrainian government is conducting a witch hunt against not only militias, but also all the residents who oppose Kiev’s policies in the country’s east, Russia’s human rights ombudsman Konstantin Dolgov said on Thursday.

The diplomat said the situation is serious, naming as examples teh situations when a teacher in Odessa was fired after she condemned the military operation in Donbas, and when an elderly person was sentenced to five years in jail for participating in peaceful protests.

“The Ukrainian authorities have crudely violated their international commitments. The list of these commitments is broad: this is a Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the European Convention on Human Rights,” he said.

He also accused Kiev of violating the UN Convention against Torture. “As we see from recent media reports, not only Ukraine’s authorities resort to torture - it seems that they take a pattern by those who have been doing this for long in violation of international commitments,” he said.

Dolgov said earlier Moscow has studied the 528-page report by Senate Intelligence Committee, released on Tuesday, which detailed the CIA use of torture during the interrogation of terrorism suspects in the years following the 9/11 attacks on the US.

The diplomat said the content of the CIA torture report is “shocking” and the situation is in contradiction with the US claims that it is an "example of democracy.".
