US wants the UN Security Council to discuss human rights in North Korea

PYONGYANG, December 10. /TASS/. The United Nations Security Council may become an instrument to implement plans of the US, a representative of North Korea’s foreign ministry said in a statement, which was published in the local media on Wednesday.

The official said the UN Security Council will become an instrument to implement plans of the US in case it approves the initiative from Washington and its allies to have it discuss the issue of human rights in North Korea. The diplomat said the United States intently try to have this issue discussed at the Security Council, not at the UN Human Rights Committee “so that they have a reason for a military intervention.” Thus, the statement reads, Washington wants to use the Security Council “for implementation of hostile policies against Pyongyang.”

The Security Council does not pay necessary attention to many violations of human rights in the US, the statement reads. “If under the pressure from Washington and its allies, it agrees to put on the agenda discussion of this problem in the DPRK, this decision would become a clear demonstration of the policy of double standards,” the diplomat said.

Pyongyang began an active counter-propaganda stressing advantages of the socialist system in human rights as the third committee of the UN General Assembly recommended on November 19 to the Security Council to file to the international criminal court in the Hague violations of human rights in North Korea. The resolution, which was drafted by the European Union and Japan, was supported by the UN 111 members. The 19 countries, which voted contra, included Russia, Belarus, China, Cuba and Syria. Another 55 countries abstained from voting.
