About 9,800 Americans will remain in Afghanistan when the combat mission ends December 31

WASHINGTON, December 5. /TASS/. The planned withdrawal of the US main combat units from Afghanistan has practically been completed, Commander of the US Transportation Command (Transcom) Paul J. Selva told reporters on Thursday. The forces, equipment and support services have been pulled out.

According to General Selva, the drawdown in Afghanistan is moving according to the plan laid out a year ago. About 9,800 Americans will remain in Afghanistan when the combat mission ends December 31, the Department of Defense said. Transcom will ship needed materials to those troops as well as helping supply Afghan forces, which totally take over the security mission from NATO. Transcom will also help supply coalition forces remaining in the country.

“We’re almost finished with the drawdown so we will see the demand signal stabilise,” the general said.

In 2011, the maximum number of American troops in Afghanistan was reaching 101,000 men.

Selva said on Thursday that the army materials have been massively shipped from Afghanistan to Kuwait where the equipment is accumulated and sorted for its further use, sale or scrapping.
