According to the Ukrainian president, the world needs a new system of security, since the post-war structures, both European and global, are no longer efficient

KIEV, November 30. /TASS/. The world needs a new system of security, Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko said on Sunday in interview with Germany’s ARD television company.

The world needs a new system of security, since the post-war structures, both European and global, are no longer efficient, he said. Ukraine, in his words, is ready to take part in that new system.

“The new system of security will be aimed against no one in particular, including Russia. It will be geared to protect own territory, to make any border violations and aggression absolutely inadmissible. It will have efficient mechanisms to preserve peace,” the press service of the Ukrainian president quoted him as saying.

The Ukrainian president noted that NATO is “a system that is capable of ensuring security of its members.” Commenting on Ukraine’s possible applying for NATO membership, Poroshenko said the matter was not in filing application but in Ukraine needing reforms.

“It is necessary to do everything to make the country, incomes of its citizens and its gross domestic product, its investments in defense and its armed forces meet the criteria for countries seeking NATO membership,” he noted, adding that the past four years demonstrated that the off-bloc model was a mistake.

He said he would not let anyone from outside to exert pressure in issues concerning the country’s development and its foreign policy course and pledged to be attentive to the opinion of the Ukrainian people.
