Members of the parliament want Ukraine to renounce its non-bloc status and return to a policy of rapprochement with NATO saying it will strengthen Ukraine’s positions in defense and security issues

KIEV, November 28. /TASS/. Lawmakers in Ukraine have tabled proposals for the state to end its non-aligned status while President Petro Poroshenko has warned deputies over West-leaning alliances.

Members of the parliament want Ukraine to renounce its non-bloc status and return to a policy of rapprochement with NATO saying it will strengthen Ukraine’s positions in defense and security issues.

Addressing the newly elected Verkhovna Rada assembly on Thursday, however, the head of state said the idea of Ukraine joining NATO keeps splitting the country, urging parliament not to press the issue for the time being.

Official support for NATO membership harmed Euro-Atlantic prospects, he warned: “I have made a statement and received an answer (from Western partners - TASS) that Ukraine will never be a NATO member,” the president said. “We should begin not from loud statements, as there are many of them, but from real reforms,” he added.

Deputies endorsed law determining Ukraine’s non-bloc status in July, 2010.
