KIEV, November 27. /TASS/. Ukraine’s pilot Nadezhda Savchenko, who has been held in jail in Russia since July for complicity in the death of Russian journalists, took oath as a member of Ukraine’s parliament on Thursday.
Savchenko, who was elected to the Verkhovna Rada on the party list of Yulia Tymoshenko's Batkivshchyna, signed her oath and passed it to Ukraine through her lawyer.
“Nadezhda Savchenko is a deputy of the Verkhovna Rada,” speaker of the previous parliament Oleksandr Turchynov said at today's parliament session.
Ukrainian lawmaker Andriy Kozhemiakin told journalists that the move will allow Savchenko to become Ukraine’s representative at the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE).
Ukraine’s Central Election Commission on November 19 registered a total of 189 people’s deputies, including Savchenko, who was number one in the Batkivshchyna party’s list.
Russia’s Investigative Committee has charged Savchenko with complicity in the June killing of two Russian journalists. In late October, a Moscow court ruled to extend Savchenko’s arrest until February 13, 2015.
