Russia's Foreign Ministry expressed concern over the fact that the US side is reluctant to investigate the involvement of Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) operatives in torturing the inmates

MOSCOW, November 19. /TASS/. Russia is concerned over the US representatives’ inability to specify the timeframe of the closure of the controversial US naval base and prison at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, housing more than 100 terrorism suspects, the Russian Foreign Ministry said on Wednesday.

The ministry also expressed concern over the fact that the US side is reluctant to investigate the involvement of Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) operatives in torturing the inmates.

“The Committee against Torture considered in Geneva on November 12-13 the US reports on the fulfilment of the UN Convention against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment,” the ministry said. “It should be pointed out that the US delegation admitted violation of its own constitution and international torture prevention commitments.”

“We are deeply concerned over the US side’s inability to inform the international community of the White House plans for closure of the prison at Guantanamo, for the investigation of CIA operatives’ involvement in kidnappings in the European Union countries and keeping of prisoners in secret prisons,” the ministry said. “We are concerned over the American practice of extradition of detainees to the countries that are “unreliable” from the point of view of torture.
