Over half of the polled said they would oppose the country's joining the NATO

CHISINAU, November 18. /TASS/. The majority of Moldovan citizens favour their country’s accession to the Customs Union of Russia, Belarus and Kazakhstan, as follows from a recent opinion poll, conducted by the Institute for Public Policy in Chisinau.

“If a referendum on the issue took place in Moldova this weekend, about 47% of respondents would vote for the country’s entry into the Customs Union,” Arkady Barbaroshie, the institute’s director, said on Tuesday, adding that 29% would vote against, while another 7% would ignore the plebiscite.

“About 44% of Moldovans said they would support accession to the European Union, 35% would be against it, and 5% said they would not vote at all,” Barbaroshie said. “Besides, 51% of citizens would oppose the republic’s joining NATO, while 52% considered neutrality policy as the best guarantee for the country’s security.”

Recent public opinion polls have been demonstrating growing scepticism towards the European Union in Moldova, as last year’s polls put the number of EU supporters at 52%

Experts link this change in the mood with a worsening economic situation in the country and declining ratings of Pro-European Coalition, the ruling coalition in Moldova.

The opinion poll was carried out from October 26 to November 13, when more than 1,000 people in 84 settlements of the country, excluding Moldova’s breakaway Transdniestria, were interviewed. The margin of error did not exceed three percent.
