South Korea president favors three-party summit talks with Japan, China leaders

The latest three-party meeting of the South Korean, Japanese and Chinese leaders was held in Beijing in May 2012

NAYPYIDAW, November 13. /TASS/. South Korean President Park Geun-hye spoke on Thursday in favor of three-party summit talks with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and Chinese President Xi Jinping.

“I hope we will manage to hold such a meeting,” she said at the East Asia Summit in the capital of Myanmar, without mentioning a concrete timeframe.

The latest three-party meeting of the South Korean, Japanese and Chinese leaders was held in Beijing in May 2012. Since then, Tokyo’s ties with its closest neighbors in the Asia-Pacific region have visibly deteriorated against the background of territorial disputes and different interpretations of post-war history.

In particular, Seoul and Beijing are greatly displeased with pilgrimages of the Japanese prime minister and government ministers to Yasukuni Shrine in Tokyo, which is seen in Asian countries as a symbol of Japan’s militarism.
