Post-Soviet security bloc suspends dialogue with NATO
The decision was made in view of what CSTO Secretary-General described as unconstructive and very often openly hostile initiatives by the EU and NATO towards Russia and the CSTO
MOSCOW, November 6. /TASS/. The Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) has decided to suspend efforts aimed at establishing dialogue with NATO, CSTO Secretary-General Bordyuzha said Thursday during a session of the organization's parliamentary assembly.
“The efforts to establish a dialogue with NATO have been paused,” he told the CSTO Parliamentary Assembly on Thursday.
Bordyuzha said the decision was made in view of what he described as “unconstructive and very often openly hostile initiatives by the EU and NATO towards Russia and the CSTO.”
He declared that the CSTO would follow a policy of further expansion of cooperation with the OSCE and also take steps to bolster cooperation with the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, China, Iran, and the countries of Latin America and the Caribbean.
“There is every ground to point to the prevalence of negative trends in the development of the global military-political situation,” Bordyuzha said. He believes that there has emerged the risk of world instability evolving into direct confrontation between the global poles of power.
Bordyuzha applied the term “nodes of instability” to Afghanistan, with its drug trafficking and extremist sentiment in the neighbouring countries of Central Asia, the relapse of tensions over Nagorno-Karabakh, the situation in Ukraine and the upsurge of extremism in Iraq, Syria and Afghanistan. He also mentioned “unprecedented information pressures and sanctions” and “trade wars.
