The system of global and regional security is weakened and deformed

MOSCOW, October 29. /TASS/. The conflicts in the Middle East cannot be resolved by force, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said on Wednesday.

Russia is ready to facilitate searching for the political settlement, he said at a session on the occasion of Islamic New Year.

“The system of global and regional security is weakened and deformed. The events in the Middle East and North Africa demonstrate this. Destabilisation in the region is fraught with the danger of uniting different crises in one explosive tangle,” he said.

“We believe that no conflict whether it be in Syria, Libya, Iraq, Yemen and the Sahara Sahel region can be solved by force. Only a broad nationwide dialogue with the participation of all ethnic, confessional and political groups can ensure accord, stability and necessary prerequisites for the successful social and economic development of all countries that turned out to be in the conflict zones,” Lavrov said.

“Russia is ready to facilitate the search for effective ways to settle crises by political means both at the bilateral level and within multilateral formats,” he said.

Commenting on the situation in Afghanistan, Lavrov said, “We hope that the formation of the government of national unity will contribute to strengthening Afghanistan’s statehood and increasing effective collective efforts to promote stabilisation in the country and in the region as a whole and neutralise terrorist and drug threats.

Russia hopes for a positive response on its initiative to carry out a comprehensive analysis of Middle East problems under the UN Security Council control.

“In order to ensure the success of the anti-terrorism fight it is necessary to pay priority attention not only to the military threat posed by Jihadists but also to the sources that engendered this phenomenon,” Lavrov said.

“In general the accumulating contradictions can be settled only by uniting all forces of the world community, strengthening the dialogue and partnership and respecting people’s rights to preserve cultural, religious and civilised identity. A comprehensive analysis is in demand. It is necessary to watch interrelationship of the most pressing problems, which affect the region, including the Arab-Israeli conflict,” he said.
