Brazil superior electoral court officially confirms Rousseff’s re-election as president
After 99.62% of all ballots were counted Rousseff has gained 51.6%
RIO DE JANEIRO, October 27. /TASS/. Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff was re-elected to the top state post for second four-year term in a presidential runoff on Sunday, President of the Superior Electoral Court, equivalent of the Central Elections Commission, Jose Dias Toffoli said officially. After 99.62% of all ballots were counted Rousseff has gained 51.6%.
Her rival Aecio Neves, who leads the opposition Social Democracy Party, was supported by 48.4% of votes. After election returns were summed up Neves admitted his defeat and thanked all his supporters for backing.
“In general, the election was held in a calm atmosphere,” Toffoli said. Around one thousand violations were reported and will be tried by Election Justice instances.
An unidentified criminal shot dead a voter who was queuing for voting and escaped from the scene in Rio Grande do Norte State. Police believe that this crime was most likely settlement of scores. Protesting against action of local authorities a group of local residents set two buses on fire in the north of megapolis San Paolo. A voter sought to set an electronic ballot box on fire and was detained in Minas Gerais State. Meanwhile, an electronic chip which contained election returns was not damaged.
This list of violations cannot cause special concerns in a country where from 200 million around 143 million participated in the vote, observers said.
