WASHINGTON, October 24. /TASS/. The US administration has confirmed that a Russian citizen, who had been fighting on the side of Islamic militants and was detained in Afghanistan, will be put on trial in the United States. The suspect is Irek Khamidullin, who was detained in Afghanistan in 2009 and has been kept since at a military prison near Bagram Air Force base.

Bernadette Meehan, a spokeswoman for the White House's National Security Council, confirmed that the prisoner kept at the Parwan prison in Afghanistan would be brought to the United States to stand trial there.

She did not elaborate. The question as to whether the US officials have notified their Russian colleagues about the decision to bring the prisoner to the US remains unanswered.

Commenting on the decision passed by the US administration, the spokeswoman cited an agreement on security, signed by Washington and Kabul and which goes into force since January 1, that envisages that Afghanistan takes over responsibility for all detention centers on its territory.
