BISHKEK, October 23. /TASS/. A district court in Bishkek on Thursday issued a life sentence for corruption to Maksim Bakiyev, the younger son of Kyrgyzstan’s former president Kurmanbek Bakiyev, a spokesperson for the court registry told TASS.

Maksim Bakiyev, who stood at the head of the Central Agency for Development and Investment as of 2010, has been found guilty of stealing some $37 million from the country’s Social Fund, he said. “Bakiyev Jr.’s business partners Mikhail Nadel and Yevgeny Gurevich have been declared accomplices in the operation.”

The two latter have been sentenced to 25 years in prison in absentia and property confiscations. In addition, the court ruling stripped them of the right to occupy government positions for three years.

The judges ruled that Bakiyev, Nudel and Gurevich should make up for the damage inflicted on the state finances in the amount of $55 million.

President Kurmanbek Bakiyev was ousted in a revolution - the second one in the history of modern Kyrgyzstan - in April 2010. He had to flee the country and is currently living in Belarus, which refused to extradite him to the Kyrgyzstani authorities citing the apprehensions he might be subjected to politically motivated persecution back at home.

Almost all the family members, relatives and closest associates of the ousted president fled Kyrgyzstan together with him. Maksim, who settled in London somewhat later, was among them.

Kyrgyzstan’s incumbent government has demanded his extradition on a number of occasions but these requests have always been turned down.
