Humanitarian situation in Syria's government controlled areas improves — UN
The situation in the territories controlled by the Islamic State militants is only worsening
MOSCOW, October 23. /TASS/. The United Nations has noted the humanitarian situation improvement in the Syrian areas that are controlled by the national government, UN Secretary-General’s deputy spokesman Farhan Haq told reporters on Wednesday.
He said that the situation in the territories controlled by the Islamic State militants is only worsening.
Haq said the situation in Syria will be described in detail in the monthly report that UN Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator Valerie Amos is to present to the UN Security Council in the coming days. The Security Council debate on the humanitarian situation in Syria is planned for October 30.
As for the humanitarian situation in general, improvement that Amos reported has been observed in the areas controlled by the Syrian government, Haq said. More opportunities to get access to the people in need have appeared, he added. At the same time, there is very serious problem with getting to the areas controlled by the Islamic State, which causes serious concern, Haq said.
In July, the UN Security Council adopted a resolution sanctioning direct humanitarian relief supplies to the conflict-stricken areas of Syria without preliminary agreement with Damascus.
US aircraft in recent weeks have been striking at the militants’ positions in the Syrian territory and delivering aid to the population by dropping the supplies from a plane. On Sunday, the US Air Force for the first time delivered a batch of weapons to the Kurdish militias who defend Kobane, but part of the weapons was seized by Islamists.
On Tuesday, Russian Permanent Representative to the United Nations Vitaly Churkin told TASS he was not surprised by the mistake and said this testified to the need to coordinate such actions with Damascus.
