Kiev said that rights activists’ conclusions on Ukrainian army’s use of cluster munitions in east Ukraine’s troubled Donetsk region are based on unchecked information, second secretary of the Ukrainian Permanent Mission in the United Nations Yegor Pivovarov said at a meeting of the 4th committee of the UN General Assembly on Wednesday in reply to the Russian diplomat’s speech.

In the view of Pivovarov, the highly debated report delivered by international rights organization Human Rights Watch “was based on unchecked information” and rights activists “were intentionally misled.” “Ukraine never used and will not use banned weapons,” he said.

On Monday, Human Rights Watch made public a report saying that “Ukrainian governmental forces used cluster munitions in highly populous districts in the city of Donetsk in early October. Rights activists noted that such action violates the laws of war and are tantamount to war crimes.

Speaking at the meeting of the 4th UN General Assembly committee first secretary of the Russian Permanent Mission in the UN Aleksey Zaitsev criticised Kiev authorities that they deny “a large part of their population to exercise their political, civil and cultural rights” and so “they seem to do all they can to prevent national conciliation.
