MILAN, October 17. /TASS/. The sides have reached no significant breakthrough at talks with Russia on resolving the conflict in Ukraine, German Chancellor Angela Merkel told reporters at the Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM) summit in Milan.

“At the moment, I cannot speak of any breakthrough,” Merkel said after the Friday morning negotiations between the presidents of Russia, Ukraine, France and the prime ministers of Italy, the UK and also the presidents of the European Commission and the European Council.

“We plan to continue the dialogue,” Merkel said.

The sides have made progress towards several issues, she said, adding however that the main problem is that Ukraine’s territorial integrity continues being violated.

Meanwhile, outgoing President of the European Commission Jose Manuel Barroso said the negotiations on the Ukrainian crisis settlement at the ASEM summit were positive and successful.

President of the European Council Herman Van Rompuy said at the meeting all the sides, including Russian President Vladimir Putin and his Ukrainian counterpart Petro Poroshenko, confirmed it is necessary resolve the Ukrainian crisis peacefully.

Earlier on Friday, Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi told journalists that the leaders have made an important step in discussing Ukraine at the summit. He said although many differences remain, it is clear that there is a “wish to find a decision which gives us hope to search for a solution.”

The European leaders have proposed establishing international control on the border between Ukraine and Russia, he said.
