Donetsk People’s Republic hopes elections will help republic’s recognition
Chairman of the Donetsk People's Republic Supreme Council hopes democratic elections will give Russia and other states more grounds to recognize the republic
MOSCOW, October 15. /TASS/. The self-proclaimed Donetsk People’s Republic (DPR) hopes that the elections will help the republic’s future recognition, chairman of the DPR Supreme Council Boris Litvinov said on Wednesday.
Political scientists discussed the upcoming elections of heads and parliamentarians in the republic, Litvinov said at a meeting with Russia's State Duma (lower house of parliament) first deputy speaker Ivan Melnikov (Communist Party).
Litvinov said the self-proclaimed republic needs new government, and it should be elected on a democratic foundation to make it legitimate.
“We hope that Russia and other states will have more grounds for recognizing our status. Let it be regional cooperation,” Litvinov said.
He also invited State Duma lawmakers to take part in monitoring the elections. “I address the State Duma. Send the observers,” he said, adding that international observers would also arrive in the republic to monitor the elections.
“We’re open. We’re for peace. We want peaceful development,” Litvinov said.
Melnikov said the Communist Party of Russia would send its observers.
Commenting on the republic’s state structure, Litvinov said primary bodies of power have been formed. “The Supreme Council, the Council of Ministers, the Supreme Court have been formed. Inferior courts are being created. There are the army and police,” he said.
Elections to the DPR People’s Council and elections of the head of the republic are scheduled for November 2.
