Kiev to do everything to prevent DPR, LPR from holding elections in November — Klimkin
The self-proclaimed Donetsk and Luhansk People's Republics plan polls for November 9 to elect local authorities
BERLIN, October 10. /TASS/. The Ukrainian authorities will do everything possible to prevent elections in the self-proclaimed Donetsk and Luhansk People’s Republics in early November, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Pavlo Klimkin said.
“We must do everything to prevent the elections in early November in the DPR and the LPR,” he said. The self-proclaimed republics plan polls for November 9 to elect local authorities.
On Thursday, Russian Foreign Ministry spokesman Alexander Lukashevich, commenting on Klimkin’s statements, said Moscow would support elections in the Donetsk and Luhansk regions. “The protocol signed in Minsk on September 5 should be shown to Klimkin,” Lukashevich said.
One of the clauses in the documents calls for “ensuring early local elections in accordance with the law of Ukraine on the provisional regulations for local self-government in some districts in the Donetsk and Luhansk regions”.
“What was agreed on must be fulfilled,” the diplomat said. “Not to persuade people aginats it, but, on the contrary, create conditions to hold elections. It is within the national dialogue that must ensure national reconciliation in Ukraine,” the Russian diplomat said.
“We will support any election procedures and attentively watch their course,” Lukashevich said.
