The government called off a proposed round of talks

HONG KONG, October 10. /TASS/. Hong Kong's student activists have called to stage another massive protest involving thousands later on Friday after the government called off a proposed round of talks.

The local administration has announced that it was “impossible” to hold the meeting planned on Friday, for the first time since the protests began in late September.

Demonstrators continue their sit-in protest, occupying streets and disrupting the traffic in the global financial hub. Protest leaders have urged students to form a big “Umbrella Square” outside the government’s headquarters.

No police interference has been reported.

An association representing truck drivers has called on the protesters to take down the barricades by October 15. The transport collapse in the city has caused tens of millions of dollars in damages.

The protesters are demanding free elections and the resignation of the chief executive, Leung Chun-ying.

The movement has been dubbed "the Umbrella Revolution" after many people used umbrellas to protect themselves from pepper spray and tear gas as well as to cope with oppressive heat.
