The current mandate envisages that the mission may consist of up to 500 monitors, but they are currently 270 OSCE observers in eastern Ukraine

VIENNA, October 8. /TASS/. The Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) believes the demands by Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko to increase the number of monitors in the country to 1,500 are “premature.”

The current mandate envisages that the mission may consist of up to 500 monitors, but this level has not been reached yet, a spokesman for the organization told TASS on Wednesday.

The OSCE Secretariat said the decision to change the mission’s mandate has to be approved by all the 57 member-states of the organization. Currently, the number of monitors in the Ukraine mission is around 270.

Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko called on the OSCE to increase the number of monitors on Tuesday. Poroshenko also invited the OSCE to take part in monitoring the parliamentary elections scheduled for October 26.

The OSCE Special Monitoring Mission to Ukraine (SMM), deployed since late March, will continue observing the situation in Donbass for at least another six months, spokesman Michael Bociurkiw said earlier this week.

The mission, in line with the Minsk agreement reached at the OSCE-mediated talks on September 5, monitors the implementation of the ceasefire regime in eastern Ukraine.
