Brazil’s Rousseff leads in presidential poll, faces Neves in runoff
With 94.3% of the votes counted, Rousseff, who gained 41.09% of the votes, is followed by Neves (34.15%) and Marina Silva of the Brazilian Socialist Party (21.1%)
RIO DE JANEIRO, October 6. /TASS/. Brazil’s incumbent President Dilma Rousseff leads the presidential poll on Sunday with over 40% of voter support and is set to face her centrist rival Aecio Neves in a runoff, the country’s electoral authority has said.
With 94.3% of the votes counted, Rousseff, who gained 41.09% of the votes, is followed by Neves (34.15%) and Marina Silva of the Brazilian Socialist Party (21.1%).
The outcome of the runoff, scheduled for October 26, will depend on who out of the two presidential candidates will gain the support of those people who have voted for Silva.
Opinion polls suggest that Rousseff is expected to win the election.
Experts say Brazil is awaiting a weeks-long political struggle during which Rousseff is due to face criticism over a slowdown in the economic growth and persistent problems in the health and education spheres.
The major achievements of Rousseff, the first woman to hold the office, include rapidly shrinking poverty, what has already lifted millions of Brazilians into the middle class.
