Shelling of Donetsk residential areas inadmissible — EU foreign policy chief

Eastern Ukraine's Donetsk has been under heavy sheeling for several days

BRUSSELS, October 3. /TASS/. The European Union’s outgoing High Commissioner for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Catherine Ashton, said on Friday shelling of residential areas in eastern Ukrainian city of Donetsk is inadmissible.

Eastern Ukraine's Donetsk has been under heavy sheeling for several days.

On October 1 at least nine people were killed and another 30 were wounded when reidential areas of Donetsk were shelled by the government forces.

One of the facilities reported to have been shelled was public school 57, where several adults were killed. There were no reports about casualties among children at the shelled school.

Red cross official killed in government forces' attack on Donetsk

A staff member of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) was killed in Donetsk on October 2 when the city was shelled from Uragan (Hurricane) multiple rocket launch systems, as follows from an OSCE report published on Friday.

Laurent DuPasquier, a 38-year-old Swiss employee of the Red Cross, arrived in Ukraine about six weeks ago. “Mr. DuPasquier worked for the ICRC for more than five years, carrying out assignments in Pakistan, Yemen, Haiti, Egypt and Papua New Guinea," the organization’s statement said.

Donetsk airport under full control of self-defense forces

On Friday, Self-defense forces of self-proclaimed Donetsk People's Republic reported bringing the international airport in Donetsk under full control.

Earlier media reports claimed the EU could impose additional sanctions on Russia if Donetsk Airport and the city of Mariupol came under control of the militia.

However an EU source in Brussels told TASS, that the issue of the European Union’s further sanctions against Russia is connected not with specific inhabited localities or control zones in embattled eastern Ukraine but with observation of the truce there.
