KIEV, September 29. /ITAR-TASS/. The mayor of north-east Ukraine's Kharkiv city has pledged to restore the toppled monument to Vladimir Lenin, saying his fellow citizens did not support the actions of vandals.

“Let law-enforcement authorities establish who did it. Our task is to restore the monument,” Gennady Kernes said on Russian News Service radio.

Demonstrators at a Sunday rally in support of Ukrainian unity pulled the statue from its pedestal, toppling the 20-meter-high monument - the country’s highest - with ropes and a crane.

Ukrainian Interior Minister Arsen Avakov said the criminal case opened over the incident would be closed because it was an order of regional administration head Igor Baluta to remove the monument.

A second monument to Lenin was dismantled in Kharkiv region overnight.
