Moldova demands Russian peacekeepers in Transdniestria be replaced by int’l civil mission
UNITED NATIONS, September 26. /ITAR-TASS/. Chisinau insists on the soonest withdrawal of Russian peacekeepers from Transdniestria and deployment of an international civil mission, Moldova’s Foreign Minister Natalia Gherman said on Thursday at a meeting of the United Nations General Assembly.
She said that withdrawal of Russian troops would have a positive impact on the talks between Chisinau and Tiraspol.
She also spoke in favor of the soonest resumption of Transdniestrian settlement talks in the 5+2 format, involving Russia, Ukraine, the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), the European Union, the United States, and Moldova and Transdniestria. In her words, the presence of Russian forces “creates additional obstacles” for the peace process.
Chisinau’s ultimate goal, she stressed, was the same - to find a political solution based on Moldova’s sovereignty and territorial integrity and granting Transdniestria a special status.
