LUHANSK, September 25. /ITAR-TASS/. The areas governed by the self-proclaimed Luhansk People’s Republic (LPR) in Ukraine’s embattled eastern regions have population estimated at 64.4% of all the residents in the Luhansk region, the regional governor said on Thursday.

“As of September 1, the population of the Luhansk region is estimated at about 2.225 million people,” Gennady Moskal said. “At least 26.1% of the region’s residents live in the areas controlled by the Ukrainian government, with another 9.5% — in the area partially controlled by Kiev.”

LPR is in charge of major big regional cities as Luhansk, Krasnodon, Lutuhyne, Perevalsk, Alchevsk, Antratsyt, Brianka, Kirovsk, Krasnyi Luch, Pervomaisk, Rovenky, Sverdlovka and Stakhanov, the regional administration said.

The republic’s authorities have under control four other parts of the region, it said.

Over 50% of the population in the Donetsk region live in the territory under control of the Donetsk Peoples’ Republic (DPR). In mid-September, two Ukrainian public organizations said in their report that "a total of about 3.5 million voters live in the Donetsk region, with two million out of them in the areas controlled by the militia".
