UN Special Rapporteur Chaloka Beyani urged the Ukrainian government to exert more effort aimed at protecting the rights of internally displaced persons

GENEVA, September 25. /ITAR-TASS/. The number of internally displaced persons in Ukraine can reach 900,000 people, UN Special Rapporteur on the Human Rights of Internally Displaced Persons Chaloka Beyani said on Thursday after his 10-day visit to Ukraine.

Beyani, who visited Kiev, Kharkiv, Dnepropetrovsk, Zaporozhye, the Luhansk and Donetsk region, urged the Ukrainian government to exert more effort aimed at protecting the rights of internally displaced persons.

In order to provide aid to as many people as possible a clear registration and assessment of people’s needs are indispensable. This is very important when the winter is coming, he said.

On Tuesday, UN Assistant Secretary-General for Human Rights Ivan Simonovic said the death toll from Ukrainian conflict has reached 3,543 people, including the MH17 flight victims.
