UNITED NATIONS, September 25. /ITAR-TASS/. Kiev hopes Russia will stick to all points of an agreement on the settlement of the Ukrainian crisis signed in Belarusian capital Minsk in early September, Ukrainian Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk said Wednesday when speaking at the UN General Assembly session.

The parties to the intra-Ukrainian conflict agreed on cessation of fire during talks mediated by the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) on September 5 in Minsk two days after Russian President Vladimir Putin proposed his plan to settle the situation in the east of Ukraine.

Ukrainian PM hopes austerity to save Ukraine from default

Yatsenyuk said during a speech in the Council on Foreign Relations in New York that his country will avoid default if it slashes expenditures.

Yatsenyuk said Ukraine has adopted a package of austerity measures, adding that he and his colleagues were doing everything possible to stabilize the country’s financial sector.

Ukraine has been in turmoil since the end of last year. Riots of those discontented with the then-Ukrainian authorities’ decision to suspend the signing of an association agreement with the EU resulted in a coup in February 2014.

Following the coup, Crimea seceded from Ukraine and joined Russia; after that, residents of the southeastern Donetsk and Luhansk regions of Ukraine began seeking more powers for their territories, which resulted in fierce clashes between Ukrainian troops and local militias in the Donetsk and Luhansk regions.

According to UN data, some 3,500 people, including hundreds of civilians, have been killed and hundreds of thousands of people have fled Ukraine’s war-torn southeast as a result of the clashes during Kiev’s military operation to regain control over the breakaway territories, which call themselves the Donetsk and Luhansk republics.
