MOSCOW, September 23. /ITAR-TASS/. The Japanese government has made no decisions so far concerning Russian president’s upcoming visit to Tokyo, Minister-Counselor of the Japanese Embassy in Moscow Otsuki Kotaro said on Tuesday commenting on reports in Japan media that the visit had been cancelled.

“There could be no decision, as it is a day off in Japan today,” he said.

Earlier, the Russian and Japanese leaders agreed in principle on Putin’s visit in autumn. “We proceed from the fact that our president was invited, accepted the invitation and the Japanese side confirmed the timeframe of the visit,” Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said earlier.

Otsuki said former Japanese Prime Minister Yoshiro Mori visited Moscow recently and at talks with Putin the sides confirmed the importance of maintaining summit level contacts.

He said, however, that there would be no meeting of the two countries’ foreign ministers.

In a telephone conversation on Sunday President Putin and Prime Minister Shinzo Abe discussed the need to continue bilateral contacts at different levels, the Kremlin press service reported.

It said “the leaders discussed key issues of Russian-Japanese relations, as well as exchanged opinions on pressing issues on the international agenda, including the situation in Ukraine”.
