UNITED NATIONS, September 18. /ITAR-TASS/. The changing nature of armed conflicts requires a more active interaction among the UN Security Council members and strengthening international crisis prevention mechanisms, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said in an exclusive interview with Itar-Tass on Thursday.

According to him, “the developments in Syria, Iraq, Gaza Strip, South Sudan, Central African Republic, in Ukraine and other parts of the world reflect the changing nature and complexity of conflicts.” “In our world where everything is interrelated most of the challenges we are facing within one country or continent may have global consequences, if they are not timely prevented or settled,” the UN chief said.

Russia's role in conflict solving

 Ban Ki-moon said that the UN Security Council, first of all its permanent members, including Russia, “bear unique responsibility” for the prevention of conflicts. “I think the time has come for a new era of interaction, cooperation and efficient measures by the UN Security Council, and we must continue the strengthening of our conflict prevention mechanisms.”  

The UN chief also stressed Russia's exeptional role in conflict solving: “I cannot overestimate the importance of solid partnership between the Russian Federation and United Nations Organization in ensuring the rule of law in international relations, in encouraging international peace and security, as well as in the efforts for the development of international co-operation in the sphere of the economy and environment protection,” the UN chief said.

He added that the quick taking of mediation efforts and measures for conflict prevention are critical. The creation of coalitions and interaction with regional organisations is equally important, the UN chief said.

Reforming the UN Security Council

Answering a question on the progress of the UN Security Council’s reform debate, Ban said this decision should be made by the organization’s member states.

“I understand that this process is complicated and no consensus on it has been reached so far, but I continue to call on the member states to be active in handling this matter, as it is very important to reform the Security Council to make it a more transparent, accountable and representative body,” the UN chief said.
