Speaker orders probe into Donbass vote in parliament
On Tuesday, the parliament passed by 265 votes a draft law establishing special terms of self-government in certain parts of the Donetsk and Luhansk regions, commonly known as Donbass
KIEV, September 17. /ITAR-TASS/. Parliament Speaker Oleksandr Turchynov on Wednesday ordered a probe into Tuesday’s closed-door vote that granted a special status to parts of the independence-seeking Luhansk and Donetsk regions in the east of the country and amnesty to its militias.
The move followed questions from the media why the voting had been held behind closed doors.
“The voting was conducted in compliance with the regulations and there were no breaches,” Turchynov said.
He said the motion of holding a closed-door vote had been proposed twice and supported only on second try.
On Tuesday, the parliament passed by 265 votes a draft law establishing special terms of self-government in certain parts of the Donetsk and Luhansk regions, commonly known as Donbass, and a draft law exempting militias and their supporters from prosecution.
Several activists from the nationalistic Right Sector gathered in front of the presidential administration building on Wednesday, demanding that President Petro Poroshenko veto the draft laws.
