MOSCOW, September 17. /ITAR-TASS/. The United States mistakenly hopes to get Russian help at the UN Security Council amid Washington’s sanctions policy and attempts to isolate Moscow, a senior Russian lawmaker said on Wednesday.

Last week, US Secretary of State John Kerry said Russia should back, rather than hamper, US efforts to eliminate the Islamic State militant group, also known as the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), which has taken large parts of Iraq and Syria under control.

In remarks to the statement, the head of Russia's State Duma foreign affairs committee, Alexei Pushkov, has condemned Washington’s “strange logic” to attempt to secure Russia’s support at the UN Security Council in the fight against the Islamic State.

“The weakening world hegemon, which fails to react towards all the international challenges, now needs our support in the fight against the so-called Islamic State in the Middle East, also in the framework of the UN Security Council,” the lawmaker said.

“The US, Brussels and the European capitals should make a choice what they think Russia is for them - a country which they…are trying to make a pariah state or a country with which they need to cooperate to control the extremely difficult processes in various parts of the world.”

Russian Foreign Ministry spokesman Alexander Lukashevich warned last week that the planned US airstrikes against IS militants in Syria would be a “gross violation” of the international law and an “act of aggression.
