KIEV, September 04. /ITAR-TASS/. Members of the Verkhovna Rada (Ukraine’s parliament) initiated a bill on Thursday on the introduction of martial law in the eastern Ukrainian Donetsk and Luhansk regions.

The leader of the parliamentary faction Batkivshchyna (Fatherland), Sergei Sobolev, and Svoboda (Freedom) faction leader Oleh Tyahnybok initiated the bill.

The explanatory note to the document says “the bill will help mobilize Ukrainian society” in the fight “for restoration of Ukraine’s territorial integrity.”

Tyahnybok told reporters on the sidelines of the Ukrainian parliament’s closed-door session that “Svoboda MPs have prepared parliament’s draft appeal to the Ukrainian president on the introduction of martial law in Donbas [Ukraine’s southeast region] that will be put to the vote at the next meeting.”

Acting deputy chief of the Ukrainian presidential administration Andrei Senchenko previously said martial law in the Donetsk and Luhansk regions was necessary.

“The current need to impose martial law on these two regions in obvious,” he said. According to him, such measures may contribute to success of the Ukrainian army’s operation in the east of the country against separatist militia.
