Kiev hopes for more decisive EU action

Poroshenko thanked Merkel for efforts to include the Ukrainian issue in the agenda, the presidential press service said

KIEV, August 30 (Itar-Tass) - Kiev hopes for the European Union’s support and decisive action in connection with the situation in southeastern Ukraine, Ukrainian President Pyotr Poroshenko told German Chancellor Angela Merkel in a phone call on Friday evening.

The sides coordinated steps for further action before the European Council meeting that will be held in Brussels on August 30.Poroshenko thanked Merkel for efforts to include the Ukrainian issue in the agenda, the presidential press service said.

The president said he intended to bring real information about the situation in Ukraine’s Donbass region to the 28 EU leaders, the press service added.

Deputy chief of staff of the Ukrainian presidential administration Valery Chaly said on Ukrainian television late on Friday that Kiev hoped that the EU would impose additional sanctions against Russia. “We are trying to achieve more decisive action from the EU, including a broader package of sanctions against Russia. Decisions are made with difficulty. It does not satisfy us. But we hope we will come to a decision in Brussels,” Chaly said.

Poroshenko was planned to have eleven meetings with EU leaders, he said. “It will give an opportunity to bring our position and receive support from the EU in one day, from the morning to the night,” he added.

Ukraine hoped for economic support, but not only more military assistance, he said.
