The report for the period from July 16 to August 17 gives the toll of 2,220

GENEVA, August 29. /ITAR-TASS/. The death toll from fighting in eastern Ukraine nears 2.600, the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights said here on Friday.

At least 2,593 people were killed in Ukraine during the period from mid-April to August 27, 2014, the office said, presenting the fifth report of the monitoring mission in Ukraine.

The report for the period from July 16 to August 17 gives the toll of 2,220. Thus, the fighting between Ukrainian government forces and the militia in eastern Ukraine took 373 lives more during the ten days.

UN experts said it was a “conservative assessment”. The factual number of victims most likely is much more, the 32-page report said.

During the four months of fighting in Donbass, 5,956 people were wounded, including 38 children.

UN experts said the real number of victims of the civil war in eastern Ukraine was not known because there was no safety. Many are not taken to hospitals. City services do not work at all or operate with halts. Many bury their relatives themselves, not informing authorities.
