Poroshenko, Merkel discuss situation in Donbass

KIEV, August 29./ITAR-TASS/. Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko and German Chancellor Angela Merkel in a telephone call discussed the situation in Donbass and steps to establish a dialogue for a peaceful settlement of the situation, the Ukrainian presidential press service said on Friday.

Poroshenko asked Merkel to do everything in the European Union and in the international arena to support Ukraine.

The chancellor assured Germany was ready to support resolute steps of the EU at the next meeting of the European Council on August 30. The European Union must show solidarity with Ukraine, she said.

The two leaders discussed a possible address of Poroshenko to heads of states and governments at the European Council meeting and agreed to continue the intensive dialogue to promptly respond to developments in the Donetsk and Luhansk regions.
