MOSCOW, August 27. /ITAR-TASS/. There is a need to reduce the number of checkpoints on the Abkhazian-Georgian border so as to tighten up border-crossing control there, believes Abkhazia’s President-Elect Raul Khadzhimba.

“There’s one checkpoint on the border between Abkhazia and Russia and in spite of all the complexities is fully matches our demands and the demands of the Russians heading for Abkhazia,” he said.

“In the meantime, the Abkhazian-Georgian border has five checkpoints and this adds laxity to the situation,” Khadzhimba said. “People keep violating the border crossing regulations now and then.”

He stressed the importance of establishing practical control over the border crossing.

“There can be no bans on crossing the border because people (on both sides of the border. — ITAR-TASS) are allied by family bonds,” Khadzhimba said. “Like any civilized state, we don’t forbid this but control over people’s movements across the border should also be like in a civilized state.”

“We don’t have any other demands,” he said.

Khadzhimba did not rule out a reduction of checkpoints and said a unified border-crossing center would be set up to impose stricter control on the situation.
