Opposition candidate wins Abkhazia presidential polls

Khadzhimba polled 50.57% of the vote (with 50,494 people supporting him)

SUKHUM, August 25. /ITAR-TASS/. Opposition leader Raul Khadzhimba won a victory already in the first round of the election of Abkhazia's president. The preliminary data of the Central Election Commission of the Republic of Abkhazia following the processing of 100% of ballot-papers were made public by Commission Chairman Batal Tabagua.

Khadzhimba polled 50.57% of the vote (with 50,494 people supporting him) while his main rival Aslan Bzhaniya gained 35.91%, winning the backing of 35,860 people.

So, Khadzhimba is reckoned elected Abkhazia's President, Tabagua stated.

Mirab Kishmariya is third with 6.4% of the vote (6,389 backers). The fourth candidate, Leonid Dzapshba, polled 3.4% of the vote (3,397 people).

Earlier, the electoral headquarters of the losing candidates stated that there had been infractions during the polling "but not such that can make it possible to call results in question".

Khadzhimbad had participated in presidential elections three times by failed to achieve success. In various years he had headed the Cabinet of Ministers, and held the post of Vice-President of Abkhazia.
