Four prisoners killed in artillery attack on penal colony in Donetsk region
Fierce riots broke out and 106 prisoners succeeded in escaping
DONETSK, August 21. /ITAR-TASS/. Four prisoners were reported dead and another six injured in an artillery attack on a penal colony in the town of Makeyevka, Ukraine’s eastern Donetsk region, on Thursday, State Penitentiary Service spokesperson Yekaterina Denisyuk said.
“Yesterday artillery fire killed two prisoners and wounded eight. The injured were taken to hospital. Two of them were in critical condition and doctors could not to save their lives,” Denisyuk said.
The strict security penal colony came under artillery fire on the night from August 10 to August 11. Fierce riots broke out and 106 prisoners succeeded in escaping. “Thirty-four prisoners returned the next day,” the State Penitentiary Service said.
“Most convicts left the restricted area, but later told the colony’s administration by telephone that they intended to return to serve their terms further after the situation had stabilized,” the State Penitentiary Service said.
