Kiev shelling death toll on rise in southeast Ukraine
As many as 34 people were killed and 29 were wounded in the city of Donetsk over the past day
DONETSK, August 20./ITAR-TASS/. Ukrainian military forces continue pounding cities in southeast Ukraine destroying infrastructure facilities and killing civilians.
As many as 34 people were killed and 29 were wounded in the city of Donetsk over the past day, Donetsk regional authorities said.
Eyewitnesses said about the death of five Donetsk residents in shelling from multiple launch rocket systems Grad.
Two districts in the city have been shelled massively since Tuesday evening. A coalmine has also been pounded. Drones were flying over the city on Wednesday. Several strong blasts have gone off in central Donetsk since Wednesday morning. The gunfire set a warehouse with car tyres ablaze.
Water supply disrupted on August 18 due to power lines broken in shelling was resumed in several districts of Donetsk. The broken power line was restored and water delivery will begin already on Wednesday, the ministry of fuel and energy of the self-proclaimed Donetsk People’s Republic said. Water supply is planned to resume in the routine mode within two days.
Ten people were killed in the town of Makeyevka, five kilometres away from Donetsk, over the past day. Eyewitnesses said that shelling of the city has started on Wednesday morning. A cocking plant caught fire as an artillery shell had hit it. Employees of the plant were evacuated and production was halted.
As many as 951 people were killed and more than 1,700 were wounded in a Ukrainian punitive operation in Donetsk region since March 13, Donetsk regional health authorities said.
Meanwhile, the Ukrainian Finance Ministry has estimated material damage from military confrontation in the country’s southeast at $615 million. “Our estimates are preliminary. Now it is obvious that figures will be much higher,” Finance Minister Alexander Shlapak said.
