European Commission confirms plans to attend Customs Union-Ukraine-EU summit
The EU officials intend to discuss the implementation of the EU-Ukraine association and free trade agreement, the possibility to restart gas talks between Russia, Ukraine and the European Union
BRUSSELS, August 20. /ITAR-TASS/. The European Commission confirmed its plans on Wednesday to attend a meeting of the Customs Union, Ukraine and EU officials in Minsk on August 26.
Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko and European Commission head Jose Manuel Barroso have been earlier invited to attend the summit of the leaders of Russia, Belarus and Kazakhstan, which form the Customs Union.
A European Commission spokesman said the EU was confirming its participation in the summit on the invitation of Russian President Vladimir Putin and supported by Ukrainian President Poroshenko.
Instead of European Commission head Barroso, who will not be able to come to the meeting, EU High Commissioner for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Catherine Ashton, EU Trade and Energy Commissioners Karel De Gucht and Gunther Oettinger will attend the Customs Union summit, the spokesman said.
The EU officials intend to discuss the implementation of the EU-Ukraine association and free trade agreement, the possibility to restart gas talks between Russia, Ukraine and the European Union in September and Europe’s concern over security in Ukraine, the European Commission spokesman said.
