Speculations about broader UK involvement in Iraq satarted after Defense Secretary Michael Fallon said the UK’s role in Iraq “is not simply a humanitarian mission”

LONDON, August 18. /ITAR-TASS/. Britain will not be involved in a new war in Iraq, Britain Prime Minister David Cameron said on Monday.

“We are not going to be putting boots on the ground, we’re not going to be sending in the British Army,” he said. “Britain is not going to get involved in another war in Iraq”, though the country would help fight the terrorist group Islamic State.

Speculations that the government could consider sending troops to northern Iraq started as Defense Secretary Michael Fallon said the UK’s role in Iraq “is not simply a humanitarian mission”.

On August 16, the British government expanded its air surveillance mission in Iraq with Rivet Joint surveillance aircraft sent to Iraq in addition to Tornado bombers and Chinook military transport helicopters already deployed in Iraq.

Foreign Secretary Philip Hammond earlier said Britain was ready to start military supplies to Northern Iraq upon the government’s request.
