North Korea leader Kim Jong Un tests new tactical missiles on Liberation Day

On Friday North Korea marks one of major national holidays the Day of Liberation of Korea from Japanese colonial domination

PYONGGYANG, August 15. /ITAR-TASS/. Leader Kim Jong Un of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) supervised the test-firing of Korean-style tactical missiles which had been developed on his initiative.

The Korean Central News Agency reported on Friday that the test-firing was conducted on the occasion of the country's national holiday the 69th anniversary of the liberation of Korea.

Kim Jong Un, who combines the positions of First Secretary of the Workers' Party of Korea and First Chairman of the State Committee for Defense, was pleased with the results of the test-firing, pointing out "great successes achieved by scientists and technologists engaged in the sphere of national defense, as well as by enterprises of military specialization". He also expressed confidence that they "will continue to make a positive contribution to the cause of enhancement of the defense capability of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of the DPRK".

The Leader was accompanied by Vice-Marshal Hwang Pyong So, Chief of the Main Political Administration of the Korean People's Army (KPA), Li Yong Gil, Chief of the KPA General Staff, and other members of the top military leadership of the KPA.

On Friday the DPRK marks one of major national holidays the Day of Liberation of Korea from Japanese colonial domination. The Koreans regard August 15, 1945, as the day of the end of the colonial period (1910-1945) that followed Japan's surrender in the Second World War.

On August 9, 1945, the Soviet Union entered the war against the Japanese Empire. Within a short period, the Soviet Army routed the Kwantung army, one of major groupingf of Japan's Land Forces.

On August 15, 1945, Hirohito, the Emperor of Japan, broadcast to the nation over the national radio, acknowledging that the country was no longer able to carry on the war and had to accept the Potsdam Declaration terms about its unconditional surrender.
