Ukrainian army pledges not to use artillery and aircraft in liberation of Donetsk, Luhansk

KIEV, August 04./ITAR-TASS/. Ukrainian army units taking part in a security operation in eastern Ukraine will not use heavy artillery and aviation to liberate Donetsk and Luhansk from militias, Zoran Shkiryak, the Ukrainian Interior Ministry’s adviser, said quoted by the Ukrinform news agency on Monday.
“We are categorically against using these means (artillery and aviation) which can create a threat to civilian lives. This is a position of principle of the Ukraine’s army commander-in-chief and commanders in charge of the ground operation,” Shkiryak said.
He said the Ukrainian army and National Guard units would carry out a ground operation to liberate the populated localities in Eastern Ukraine from militias who would be in for a few surprises.
Meanwhile, the Donetsk city administration reported on Monday that the city had come under artillery fire last night.
“Explosions and artillery shots could be heard throughout the city. Besides, the city’s residential areas and social infrastructure have been shelled from heavy guns since Monday morning,” the city administration source said.
