BEIJING, August 03, 9:26 /ITAR-TASS/. A terrorist attack in China’s north-western Xinjiang-Uyghur Autonomous Region killed 37 and wounded 13 on July 29, Chinese news agency Xinhua reported on Sunday.
Thirty-five casualties were ethnic Han Chinese and two were Uyghurs.
“Police have shot down 59 terrorists and arrested 215,” secretary of the district committee of Chinese Communist Party Zhang Chongxian said. Police said that the radical organisation named the Islamic movement of Eastern Turkestan was behind the terrorist act.
Criminals armed with knives assaulted local authorities and a police station in Shache County in Kashgar District of Xinjiang-Uyghur Autonomous Region. Some of them also blocked the road, stopped cars and assailed drivers and passengers. People’s armed police, Chinese counterpart of interior troops, came to the scene and gave a rebuff to terrorists.
