TUNIS, August 01. /ITAR-TASS/. Employees of diplomatic missions from Russia and Belarus in Libya were evacuated to Tunisia, Russian Charge d’Affaires a.i. in Tunisia Konstantin Klimovsky said on Friday.
Diplomats crossed the border with Tunisia through border checkpoint Ras-Jdir at 12.45 pm UTC in the east of the country. “The motor convoy with employees of diplomatic missions from Russia and Belarus entered Tunisia and headed to the Tunisian capital,” Klimovsky said.
He noted the full Russian diplomatic mission had left Libya.
Amid the deteriorating situation in Libya many international organizations and diplomatic missions working in the North African country were suspended and their staff was evacuated. The European Union, the United States, Canada, France, Spain and Brazil have suspended their embassies in Tripoli. UN mission employees have also left the country. The foreign ministries of Egypt, Belgium, Great Britain, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands and France have earlier recommended their citizens to leave Libya for security reasons, as fierce clashes between army special forces and radical Islamists continue. Tunisia is mulling possible full closure of the border with Libya.
