Artillery shells hit two residential buildings in a city district

DONETSK, July 29. /ITAR-TASS/. At least one person was killed in the Ukrainian army’s artillery fire on Donetsk, the press office of the Donetsk People’s Republic said on Tuesday.

The Ukrainian military shelled the east Ukrainian city for the second time on Tuesday, the press office said.

“Not only the outskirts but also the center of the million-population city have suffered in the shelling,” the press office said, adding the number of people injured in the artillery attack was being specified.

Artillery shells hit two residential buildings in a city district. One shell hit the roof of a dwelling house, destroying an apartment while another fell in a courtyard in front of another residential building, smashing all windows and damaging nearby garages, the press office said.

“As a result of the shelling, one man was killed and the number of those wounded is not yet known,” the press office said.

The shelling comes after the first artillery attack on the city’s residential quarters early on Tuesday.

“At five hours in the morning, Ukrainian phosphorous bombs damaged several residential buildings in a private housing sector in the city,” the press office said.

Kiev has repeatedly said that it will not carry out massive bomb strikes against populated settlements during its military operation in east Ukraine.

“The tactics of the armed forces, the National Guard and border guards rule out massive bombings of populated areas,” spokesman for the information center of the Ukrainian National Defense and Security Council Andriy Lysenko earlier said.

“Air strikes and heavy artillery fire are delivered only against formations moving behind populated areas,” he claimed.

Lysenko also said in early June that the Ukrainian military was allegedly making “careful preparations” for seizing control of the east Ukrainian cities of Donetsk and Luhansk, without “involving aviation and heavy artillery” “because the president [of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko] prohibited the use of aviation and artillery in these cities.”

Pro-Kiev troops and local militias in the eastern Ukrainian Donetsk and Luhansk regions are involved in fierce clashes as the Ukrainian armed forces are conducting a military operation to regain control over the breakaway regions, which on May 11 proclaimed their independence at local referendums.

During the military operation, Kiev has used armored vehicles, heavy artillery and attack aviation. Many buildings have been destroyed and tens of thousands of people have had to flee Ukraine’s embattled east.
