TOKYO, July 28. /Yaroslav Makarov for ITAR-TASS/. Japan plans to expand sanctions for Russia over the current situation in Ukraine. Japan’s Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga said this at a news conference in Toyo on Monday.

“Japan will apply additional measures on Russia over the acute situation in Ukraine,” Suga noted. The head of the Japanese Cabinet specified that the new package of sanctions would envisage freezing of assets of individuals and organizations involved in de-stabilization of the situation in Ukraine, as well as a ban on importing produce from Crimea.

March 18, Japan imposed the first package of sanctions on Russia, which was related to Russia’s stance over Crimea. Then, the sanctions envisaged the suspension of consultations on visa relaxation and postponement of the start of negotiations on three deals: on investment cooperation, on cooperation in exploration of space, as well as on prevention of dangerous military activity. July 24, Tokyo announced that it temporarily stopped issuing visas to 23 representatives of Russian official institutions and other people. Their list, however, was not published.
