Venezuelan consul detained on Aruba returns home

Carvajal was detained at the request of the United States but later released by the authorities of the autonomous territory of the Netherlands

CARACAS, July 18. /ITAR-TASS/. Venezuelan Consul Hugo Carvajal who was detained last week on the Caribbean island of Aruba, has returned home after being released by the  authorities of the autonomous territory of the Netherlands.

Carvajal was detained by local law enforcement agencies at the request of the United States. He was accused of drug trafficking and support for insurgents in Colombia.

Hugo Carvajal was appointed Venezuelan Consul to Aruba in January 2014. He was one of the closest supporters of Hugo Chavez. After Chavez came to power, Carvajal became head of the military intelligence.After that, he headed the national department for fighting with organized crime and sponsoring terrorism.
