Poroshenko believes UN police mission should be sent to Ukraine
In the event of quick adoption of the decision the mission can assist the efforts to secure the international investigation of the circumstances of the MH17 crash, president said
KIEV, July 21 /ITAR-TASS/. The deployment of the UN civilian police mission in Ukraine would considerably promote international investigation into the circumstances of the crash of the Boeing plane of Malaysia Airlines, Ukrainian President Pyotr Poroshenko said in a telephone conversation with Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott, the Ukrainian presidential website reports on Monday.
Poroshenko thanked Abbott for initiating the issue of the adoption by the UN Security Council of a resolution in support of international investigation of the air crash in the Donetsk region and sending of a UN civilian police mission to Ukraine.
The Ukrainian president noted that “in the event of quick adoption by the UN Security Council of the decision the mission can considerably assist the efforts to secure the international investigation of the circumstances of the MH17 plane crash, including access of international experts to the catastrophe site.”
A diplomatic source in the UN headquarters said that the UN Security Council on Monday would vote on the draft resolution. It said that the Council meeting was scheduled for 15:00, local time (23:00 MSK).
The draft resolution prepared by the Australian delegation expresses support to the efforts aimed at conducting “a thorough and independent international investigation of the incident in accordance with the international civil aviation guiding principles.” The document requires from the people’s militia fighters on the east of Ukraine that control the Boeing crash site, “to abstain from any action” that may harm the evidence, as well as “to immediately provide a safe, full and unimpeded access” to investigators to the air crash site.
The draft resolution determines that the plane was downed and demands that those guilty of the death of people be brought to justice. Another key element of the draft resolution is the call on all the states and players in the region to refrain from aggressive actions against passenger planes.
An informed source in the UN headquarters told Itar-Tass that Russia offered a number of amendments to the basic document, submitted by the Australian delegation on Saturday. It is unknown whether the RF proposals, so far unspecified, will be taken into account.
